 Sites on the Kangal Dog

Kangal Dog Club of America. This is the official site of the KDCA. This site is updated with new articles and photos regularly.

Ilker Unlu's excellent site on Turkish dogs      Ilker's years of intensive study, and his objective approach to understanding the native dogs of his country, has made him one of Turkey's most important and knowledgeable authorities on Kangal Dogs. His site contains thoughtful articles in both Turkish and English, including analysis of the dogs known in the West as "Anatolian shepherds", plus many photographs of Turkish LGDs.

From the government web site of the Ministry of Culture in Turkey. An overview of the Kangal Dog, Turkey's National Treasure, in English. The translation is poor, and the information here is copied from very old sources that are not valid (e.g. prices in D. marks are not only outdated but also misleading--because it is illegal to export dogs out of Sivas province. Not for the faint of heart!) However, there's a nice photo gallery that gives you a sense of the variety of type among Kangal Dogs, and yet the consistency that makes them identifiable as a landrace Turkish breed.

Nice site in Turkish about the Kangal Coban Kopegi (Turkish Shepherd's Dog) established by Cumhuriyet University in Sivas Province, in cooperation with the Kangal Town Council's office.

Mikarma Kangal Dogs. Karen Affeld's Kangal Dogs, and Missouri Foxtrotter horses.

Rare on the Farm Kangal Dogs Jan and John Dohner, fine working Kangal Dogs in Michigan. Jan is also respected author of fine books on rare-breed livestock, and on livestock guardian dogs.

Der Kangal  web site by Elisabeth von Buchwaldt is a richly-illustrated site, full of photos of her own dogs and the Kangal Dogs she photographed during her travels in Turkey. Plenty of German and English-language information on the origin and current situation of Kangal Dogs in Turkey and in Europe. Elisabeth is a stalwart activist for Kangal Dog recognition in Europe.

The web site of theKangal Dog Association in Australia.   [this link now broken--I'm trying to get it updated...]

Turkishdogs.com   includes a large and nicely illustrated presentation by David and Judy Nelson. This web site is a  well-documented site full of facts and history. There are links to information about other Turkish breeds as well. However, be advised that this site is not formally associated with the Kangal Dog Club of America.

Le Kangal web site by Philippe Enguehard in France. Another champion for the Kangal Dog breed,  and the for recognition of its rightful Turkish name and standard among European registries.

Afacan Kangal Dogs  Judy Chappell's web site, with a brief history of the confusing Karabash/Anatolian registry in England.

Karabash Club of Great Britain  This club is struggling to maintain the original Karabash standard in Great Britain. There is still a split among the Karabash Club membership as to whether to retain the "Karabash" name or accept the official Turkish name for the breed, Kangal Dog. It does get confusing, but here it is, simplified: Karabash is another name for Kangal, but  Anatolian Shepherd is not.

LGD Links Page--links to myriad other LGD breeds. Written, however, by Anatolian fanciers, and thus very interestingly leaves out the Kangal Dog--Turkey's national breed--but includes Akbash Dogs.

AnatolianShepherd Dogs International (ASDI) web site  For a different point of view regarding the Turkish breeds. A view that contradicts the reality of history and dog breeds in Turkey, and a view that goes against the Turkish understanding of their own dogs.  But read and compare for yourself.

ASDCA  Anatolian Shepherd Dog Club of America. The AKC-affiliated Anatolian club. Same caviats as for the ASDI above.

"The Dispute" --a Finnish Anatolian breeder's view on Lumping vs. Splitting. (Apologies for those who will find this site impossible to read--you have to click on the "Dispute" link, but because the site uses frames, and the owner's kennel name takes up a large proportion of page real estate, and because it does not allow you to bring text up in a separate window, it is painful indeed to attempt to read. Not our fault. ;-)  Perhaps it is not meant to be read?)
